Caribbean Bands
Steel
drum music developed around WWII on the Southern Caribbean
island of Trinidad and Tobago. A classic steel band features
a variety of size steel drums from lead pans (melody), mid-size
pans (chords and harmony), and bass pans (very large 55 gallon
drums). Percussion can be added using congas, bongos, timbales,
cowbells, and shakers, and/or a drum set. These extended groups
are better for large dances and up-tempo affairs.
Modern more economical and easier to transport, smaller steel
bands can consist of 2 or 3 players using keyboards for chords,
bass and percussion parts. Modern electronics have created
very high quality instrumental sounds that are nearly unmistakable
for the real instruments. The big advantage, is that you do
not need the large "bass pans" that require trucks
for moving! Smaller groups are appropriate for events that
require simple warm weather "atmosphere", such as
weddings and promotional events.
